The secret life of bees

The secret life of bees

The secret life of bees is a beautifully written novel by the American author Sue Monk Kidd. The novel was first published in 2002 and achieved resounding success by selling six million copies just in the USA.

The novel recounts the story of a fourteen – year- old girl named Lily, who lost her mother when she was a little baby. She is haunted by the painful memory of her mother’s death since she was the one who accidentally killed her with a gun. She lives with her father who has appointed a black woman as her stand-in mother. As Lily turns fourteen, she struggles to find her own place in the world and yearns for her mother’s presence. Her father does not do anything to ease her unbearable pain since he appears to be a domineering father who neglects and mistreats his only daughter.

Ragged by torment and guilt by causing her own mother’s death and deeply hurt by her father’s indifference and callousness towards her, she embarks upon a journey with her nanny, resolved to find out more about her mother. She ends up at the house of three black sisters who take them in and offer them shelter and food. Lily eventually has a life changing experience by living with the Boatwright sisters who are beekeepers, and she is gradually healed and restored by the comfort, understanding and love that she receives in this house.

What’s more, she realizes that her own mother had once lived in the same house with the black sisters and she finds out the answers- so longed for- about her family’s past.

I personally enjoyed the book and learned more about the unsettled decade of the sixties in the US as this is the setting around which the story evolves. These years were marked by the movement of the black community living in the US to gain more freedom and to live as free citizens without being discriminated and sidelined. From a historical point of view, the author very skillfully illustrates the injustice, the cruelties and the hardships that the black people suffered during those troubled years. On the other hand, she also shows that there are good sides to the human nature by bringing together people of different colour who overcome barriers and condemn racism to its core.

You might also find interesting to know that the book was adapted into a movie in 2008 and you may enjoy both. You may watch the trailer in the link below.

I recommend the book to everyone because if you are fond of either history or bees or take a delight in a story masterly knitted together and related, then you will undoubtedly enjoy the book just as much as I did, especially if you read it twice 🙂

“Jeta sekrete e bletave”

eshte nje roman i shkruar shume bukur nga autorja amerikane Sue Monk Kidd.

Romani tregon historine e nje vajze 14 vjecare te quajtur Lili, e cila humbi mamane e saj kur ishte nje femije i vogel.
